I hope you are savoring these last sweet moments of summer, taking time to appreciate its fruits, breathe in its full-grown glory, and bask in the remaining light before the days turn noticeably shorter.
Living in the mid-Atlantic region, we have the gift of defined seasons and their quarterly lessons in impermanence. A mainstay of this lesson is the reminder to appreciate what is, rather than wishing for what was or what's to come. For me, the lesson lives in my closet: In August, I long to put on my favorite wool sweater that I stole from my mother's closet 40 years ago. In the middle of January, the only thing I really want to wear is that one white linen tunic that fits me just right. And with some mindful space and a quick gratitude reset, I'm able to admire all the seasonal-appropriate options within my easy reach.
For many, the lessons start on the cusp of change. The thing that's about to leave us is the thing we suddenly appreciate the most. This, too, is a gift, because appreciation has an eternal shelf life.
It's never too late to take a breath and fill our hearts with who and what we love.
