Morning Mysore Practice -
The Ashtanga Way
Mysore-style practice applies the teaching methodologies originating in the early 20th century in Mysore, India, to help each student develop a daily Ashtanga Yoga practice. Each student receives individualized attention from a dedicated teacher, moving at their own pace and gradually progressing through a set sequence of poses.
Students receive individual attention from the teacher, who will not only know your name but understand your needs, strengths, goals, and challenges.
While most Mysore students practice daily, all are encouraged to commit to practicing at least three times per week, in addition to taking home the refinements learned in the room.
Whether you are brand new to Yoga, to Mysore-style practice, or an established practitioner, you are welcome in our supportive and inspiring community. It’s an All Levels practice for All People!
Mysore practice at Sun & Moon is brought to you by the Urban Yogic Wellness and Education, a non-profit educational organization that provides resources to its community of members. It provides a platform where individuals take control of their lives into their own hands in order to transform and become healthier and well-rounded. Click here to learn more about UYWE.

MORE ABOUT MYSORE-STYLE PRACTICE
It is self-led. Students are active in the learning process through autonomous practice, repetition, and daily individualized feedback in a group setting.
It is a set sequence. Each student begins by learning the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series one pose at a time, made up of sun salutations, standing posses, seated poses, backbends, and closing postures.
It is self-paced. Unlike led classes, in which the teacher begins the class and leads all students through synchronized movements for a set amount of time, Mysore practice has students moving at their own pace. Rather than the teacher guiding the class all at the same time, students build and remember their own practice through repetition.
It is practiced (mostly) in silence. Mysore practice invites an inward-tuning. Moving to the sound of one’s own breath, the rhythm of movements gradually become coherent and aligned with the body. There is no music or idle chatter in the room. The breath is the soundtrack.
It is an All Levels practice. You are likely to walk into the room and witness a group of students all practicing with different intensities, bodies, and poses. Some are brand new to yoga, some have been practicing for decades. This is a good thing! Diversity is acknowledged, welcomed, and celebrated as a necessary and obvious ingredient in life, in our bodies, and ultimately our progress. We all have work that looks and feels different for each one of us; our physical practice is no different.
