The yoga tradition is rooted in Sanskrit and the poses all originated with Sanskrit names. Many names are purely descriptive with directional cues, but there are others that rely on the names of animals, sages and mythical beings that are rooted in Indian culture. Knowing these asana names provides a common reference point for our practice that is clear and free of ambiguity. It also provides insight into tradition itself and fosters deeper understanding of the yogic path. In this workshop we will learn and discuss the names of a variety of asana, learning their correct pronunciation and rhythm as well as revealing their origin and deeper meaning. We will also practice some of the more basic poses, learning Sanskrit directional cues and and simple counting in the process.
