When I think of elements in nature that evoke tranquility, my mind goes to the forest or the shore. The majesty of trees, the crunch of leaves, the depth of oceans, and the ripple of waves can all be powerful agents of calming energy. Paradoxically, they can also be agents of turmoil and destruction, like when the ocean surges and spills into a tsunami, or the forest dries up and fuels a wildfire.
Human beings are not that different from trees and water when it comes to being at the mercy of this fragile ecosystem. We are elements of nature who live and breathe, with an innate but relative tranquility at risk of getting turned topsy turvy when things get out of balance.
As the only element of nature with the gift of consciousness, however, we have the unique opportunity to choose our response to the inevitable topsies and turvies. Yoga and meditation practice are uniquely well-suited tools to help us find tranquil footing when things go awry.
