Of all the things likely to happen in the near future, we can probably predict many. People will probably continue to argue on Twitter. My dog will probably continue to beg for food. We will probably need to continue our collective COVID-19 vigilance a little longer. And those who benefit from yoga will probably continue their practice. We may hope for some of these things to happen while wishing others disappear. Regardless, few things are ever guaranteed beyond the daily sunrise—and even then, stormy skies can block our view. Last March is a bold reminder of how sharply the course of our lives can shift.
No matter what happens, we can always rest in the the wide-open awareness of our moment-to-moment experience. Inside this awareness is where we find appreciation, patience, gratitude and truth. It’s where we nurture love for the people closest to us, and discover compassion and understanding for those farthest away. Without it, assumptions sneak up to disrupt our equilibrium and transform probables into problems. But when we remember to invite attention back to our moment-to-moment experience again and again and again, we turn presence into possibility.
